About MASA

The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) is a private nonprofit member service organization representing educational administrators throughout Minnesota. Our members include school superintendents, directors of special education, curriculum and technology leaders, central office administrators, and higher education administrators and professors. In addition to our active members, MASA also serves over 250 retirees.

MASA membership supports excellence in professional practice, enhances your leadership network, and provides members with a variety of valuable benefits. Our services include professional learning opportunities, legal assistance, mentoring, legislative advocacy, and association communications. Our staff of experienced, skilled and dedicated individuals serve as a resource to our members.

MASA is a state affiliate of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). Our organizations work collectively on educational issues of national importance.

Position Overview

MASA seeks a dynamic, visionary, and experienced leader to serve as its next Executive Director. This individual will lead MASA’s strategic direction, serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson and advocate, and support members in addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities of educational leadership.

The Executive Director will build and sustain strong legislative relationships, promote collaboration across diverse educational organizations, and uphold MASA’s commitment to equity, inclusivity, and excellence in public education.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Lead MASA in setting and implementing a future-focused strategic direction

  • Represent the collective interests of members while honoring diverse perspectives across Greater Minnesota and Metro communities

  • Advance MASA’s mission and ensure the organization remains responsive to the changing educational landscape

Advocacy and Legislative Engagement

  • Serve as MASA’s primary advocate at the state and national levels

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with legislators, government agencies, and education partners

  • Influence education policy to promote equitable funding and support for public schools

  • Champion policies and practices that promote equitable opportunities for all students, support diverse leadership and continue MASA’s journey toward greater equity in education  

  • Communicate policy developments and implications clearly to members

Member Engagement and Support

  • Maintain a visible, approachable presence with MASA members

  • Foster open lines of communication and provide timely support and guidance

  • Build trust and relationships with superintendents and educational leaders across Minnesota

  • Represent the interests of both Greater Minnesota and Metro districts equitably

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Develop and sustain strong partnerships with educational associations, advocacy groups, and community organizations

  • Work collaboratively to address shared challenges and create opportunities that benefit Minnesota students and schools

Organizational Leadership and Management

  • Oversee the operations, staff, and financial health of MASA

  • Ensure efficient, transparent governance and organizational practices

  • Report to and work closely with the MASA Board of Directors to implement organizational goals and policies

Required Qualifications

  • Superintendent experience in a Minnesota school district (and a current, valid superintendent’s license in the State of Minnesota)

  • Demonstrated ability to act in a bipartisan manner while maintaining strong legislative advocacy

  • Demonstrated advocacy experience at the state or national level

  • Proven ability to navigate legislative and political landscapes effectively

  • Exceptional communication skills—verbal, written, and interpersonal

  • Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships across organizations and communities

  • Experience leading equity and inclusion initiatives in educational settings

  • Strong emotional intelligence, approachability, and commitment to public education

  • Proven leadership and management experience overseeing staff and organizational operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with professional associations or nonprofit organizations

  • Strong understanding of Minnesota’s Metro and Greater Minnesota educational contexts

  • Visionary leadership that embraces innovation and future-focused strategies

Compensation and Benefits

MASA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The starting salary range is anticipated to be $185,000–$215,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Contract length and a comprehensive benefits package, including insurance and retirement contributions, will be negotiated with the selected candidate.
