Celebrating Our Schools During Public Schools Week

Posted By: Deb M. Henton Association Updates,

Public Schools Week, which takes place this week, February 23-27, 2026, offers an important opportunity to reflect on the vital role public education plays in shaping the future of our children, our communities, our state, and our nation.

Public schools are the foundation of our society. They provide every child—regardless of background or circumstance—with the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue their goals. This promise of opportunity is at the heart of public education and remains as essential today as ever.

Across Minnesota, teachers and staff bring this mission to life each day. Their dedication ensures students receive the academic, social, and emotional support they need to succeed. Through their resilience, creativity, and compassion, educators open doors to learning and help students discover their potential—often in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.

Public schools are strongest when they are supported by the communities they serve. Families and caregivers play a critical role in student success, whether by attending school events, supporting learning at home, engaging in conferences, or volunteering their time. These partnerships strengthen our schools and reinforce the shared responsibility we all have in educating the next generation.

Every day, students across Minnesota’s public schools are achieving success in academics, the arts, athletics, career and technical education, and community service. They are developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to navigate an ever-changing world. At the same time, we recognize that challenges remain, and continued collaboration and investment are necessary to ensure our schools have the resources and support they need to fulfill their mission.

As we celebrate Public Schools Week, I encourage everyone to take a moment to visit a school, thank an educator, or reflect on the impact public education has had on your own life. Public schools are more than buildings—they are the heart of our communities and a reflection of our shared future.

Let us continue working together to ensure Minnesota’s public schools remain strong, vibrant, and prepared to serve generations to come.
