2024 Public Schools Week Celebrates Education for All Ask anyone about their favorite teacher, and almost all of them will instantly share a story of an educator who has made a significant impact on their lives. Whether it was a teacher who inspired their love of learning, a coach who taught them discipline and leadership, or a paraprofessional who provided much-needed support, public school staff members are making a positive impact on our nation’s students.
While many of us hold admiration for the public school teachers who have impacted our lives, their jobs are often thankless, difficult, and overlooked on a daily basis. This Public Schools Week, celebrated February 26 through March 1, let’s take the opportunity to cherish and celebrate our public schools, giving special recognition to the educators who bring them to life.
Public schools play an important role in our society. They provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to become productive citizens who will participate in civic life and contribute to the wellbeing of their communities. Take a moment to consider the fact that all students—regardless of social status, income, ZIP code, or ability—have the right and access to a high-quality, free education.
It is especially remarkable in the state of Minnesota, where we enjoy some of the best public schools in the country. We have a long history of supporting and championing public education, which is reflected in the success of our schools. This week is a time for us all to rededicate ourselves to actively advocating for our public schools.
In recent years, public education has often been the target of politically motivated attacks. It is more important than ever for those of us who support public education to advocate for their local schools to ensure their future success.
Without support, public schools are at risk of losing funding and resources needed to continue to provide a high-quality education for all students. Our schools need community support to counteract inaccurate information and negative narratives, while highlighting the positive stories happening in schools every day.
We are all able to make a real impact when supporting public schools. Whether you’re an educator, student, parent, or community member, you can play an active role in supporting the opportunities public education delivers to millions of students.
This Public Schools Week, I encourage you to take at least one action step to advocate for public schools in your community. Consider sharing positive stories from your local school district, thanking an educator, speaking to local or state elected officials, or advocating for public education in other tangible ways.
When community members come together in a coordinated effort, the impact on the state of public education can be significantly amplified. Through a collaborative approach, we can not only celebrate our public schools, but also contribute to their ongoing success.
Sincerely, Deb Henton, Ed.D. Executive Director Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA)
