2018 MASA FALL CONFERENCE PARTICIPANT REGISTRATION
    September 30 - October 2    •  Madden’s on Gull Lake, Brainerd, MN

What do you think of when you hear the words, “public education?”  What do you think your students think of?  How about their parents?  District staff?  Community members?  Our audiences are many and diverse, and every individual has an idea of what “school” means to them – and therefor what schooling should be today.  So what’s your story?  A critical part of school leadership is cultivating an accurate narrative about the state of public education, and sometimes that can be challenging given the range of audiences and perspectives.  Let’s take some time this fall and reflect on the stories of success, the opportunities provided by a system that is accessible to all, and the great presence of our schools in communities across Minnesota.  Let’s celebrate public education! Full Agenda

    MASA EXPERTEASE VIDEOS!

As part of our strategic plan to deliver a multi-tiered system of professional development that meets the individualized learning goals of all members, MASA has partnered with Infinitec to create a library of professional development videos that are available to MASA members 24/7. Members can view these videos for their personal professional development and also to engage their teams in discussions surrounding critical topics. We now have forty-five videos online and we feature a wide variety of topics. MASA members can complete their PD requirements for teacher relicensure at no cost, and we have a good start on the required EL topics for administrative licensure renewal. Starting this month, we will be offering several sample videos that will be directly linked from the MASA web site (no sign-in required). See below for the videos that will are available until May. We hope you enjoy these videos; please let us know what you think!

    MASA BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS

The MASA Business Partner Program provides opportunities for businesses to connect with Minnesota’s educational leaders. Our core belief is that MASA’s role in engaging business partners is to facilitate a rich conversation that helps our practitioner members understand what resources are available to support their districts, and our business partner members understand the needs of our school districts.

Incorporating Changes within your School Population

John Landgaard is Superintendent of Worthington Public Schools in southwestern Minnesota, one of the 27 districts in the state where white students are the minority. He sees this increasing diversity as a real asset to his community and to the rest of the state. In fact, he is establishing a “Grow Your Own” program for teachers who emulate the student body and solve some of the teacher shortages. Plus, he has ideas about what we need to stop doing and how we can change our high schools.

    Indian Culture/Traditions

Janey Blanchard, superintendent of Chisholm Public Schools, has experience in dealing with cultures not her own. She has experience working with our Native American students and now she is learning the culture of the Iron Range. She discusses the importance of listening and relationships. Her excitement about doing good work for all students is readily apparent. Besides, she's fun to listen to.

Based on past workshops, registering a district team is highly recommended to ensure a common understanding.

This is a workshop based on a book on referendum planning co-authored by our presenter, Dr. Don Lifto. Don is a frequent presenter at national conferences and has had more than a dozen articles on referendum planning published in national journals. Don will be joined by Barb Nicol, APR, who has more than 30-years experience in the communications field. She focuses her work on providing strategic and high-quality communications expertise to school districts and education-related organizations. The workshop’s content represents a marriage of research and successful practice, emphasizing systems and strategies rather than specific campaign tactics, allowing school leaders to elevate their thinking to a more comprehensive and long-range vision of referendum planning.
