MASA Committees, Job Tasks, and Chair Responsibilities
Executive Development Committee
Primary staff contact person: Director of Communications and Professional Development Services
The Executive Development Committee is responsible for working with MASA staff to plan Fall and Spring Conferences, as well as other workshops or seminars as appropriate. Because Spring Conference is offered jointly by MASA and MASE (Minnesota Administrators for Special Education), the Committee collaborates with the MASE Executive Development Committee for Spring Conference planning.
Legislative Committee
Primary staff contact person: Executive Director
The Legislative Committee is responsible for collaborating with the MASE Legislative Committee to prepare the annual joint MASA/MASE legislative platform and to promote legislative action. The Committee solicits input from members, develops the platform for publishing and distribution to members, legislators, other policy makers, and other agencies as appropriate prior to and during the legislative session. Members may be asked to provide written or oral testimony to legislators or other policy makers. This committee is also responsible for developing organizational position statements reflecting the view of the MASA membership. The Committee identifies issues, gathers information, conducts research, and prepares the written statements. Committee members may be asked to provide written or oral testimony to policy makers.
Member Services Committee
Primary staff contact person: Executive Director
The Member Services Committee is responsible for assessing member needs, reviewing current services, exploring possible additional services, and recommending changes in services as appropriate. The Committee recommends professional development opportunities based on member needs. This committee is also charged with reviewing the bylaws and recommending changes when appropriate.
Nominating Committee
Primary staff contact person: Executive Director
The Nominating Committee is responsible for conducting the nomination process for association officers. The Committee develops a slate of nominees prior to the annual Spring Conference.
Federal Advocacy Committee
Primary staff contact person: Executive Director
The Federal Advocacy Committee is responsible for establishing communications with MN’s eight (8) U.S. Congresspersons and MN’s U.S. Senators. As more federal legislation is enacted that impacts local schools, we need a better, and unified voice, to influence legislation at the national level.
Committee Chair Responsibilities
Position Description for Committee Chairs
1. Provides leadership to committee members to complete tasks as assigned by the Board of Directors.
2. Schedules committee meetings to accomplish the goals and objectives of the committee.
3. Prepares agenda and mails to members.
4. Records minutes of each meeting and distributes promptly to committee members, President, Executive Director, and Director of Communications and Professional Development Services.
5. Prepares reports and presentations to the Board of Directors as requested.
6. Prepares a year-end report of the activities and accomplishments of the committee.
7. Works with MASA staff as necessary to complete tasks.
